I was surprised to learn that the Yamaha PortaSound MP-1 does exist so I bought one. It’s a strange confabulation of a keyboard and pen plotter! It came with a handy hard shell case which certainly helped during shipping.
The pen plotter itself is the same tiny Alps that’s used in other small plotters like the Tandy TRS-80 PC-2 but with only a single color head instead of the four color rotating head. This is the first I’ve seen this variation before. The pen eject is the tiny lever on the head.
The gears were predictably broken but I used my 3D printed replacements and it works now.
The idea was that you’d play a melody and it would plot what you just played. Sounds great, right?
In practice, it plots so slow you’re waiting two minutes to plot just a few measures.
..But it does work!
It says disco on the plot because that’s the rhythm that was selected. Bonus points if you know the melody. 🎼 🎶
You can also plot from stored memory. Here’s a quick video of the Yamaha PortaSound MP-1 where I take the lid off the pen plotter so you can see it plotting better. It fills in the eighth notes with a quick zig zag fill.
If you like pen plotters in weird things like I do, you’ll like my blog post about typewriter plotters (and other devices)!
